From a gounder farming family in Erode district, he completed his SSLC (10th standard) from S.S.L.C. Corporation Higher Secondary School at GobichettiPalayam by 1966

Sengottaiyan joined All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazgam (AIADMK) in 1972 and started his political journey as a panchayat secretary

Transport Minister (1991–1996) during Jayalalithaa's first ministry
