India got independence from British rule on 15 August 1947, but at that time the country did not have any permanent constitution of its own. Instead, it followed the laws made by the British government. To become a truly independent nation in every sense, India needed a Constitution made by its own people. For this purpose, a Constituent Assembly was formed under the leadership of eminent leaders.

The Indian Constitution took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to draft, making it one of the most detailed constitutions in the world. Dr. B.R., known as the father of the Indian Constitution. Ambedkar played an important role as the chairman of the drafting committee. Finally, on 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force and India was declared a republic. This date was chosen to honor the Purna Swaraj (complete independence) declaration made on 26 January 1930.
